How Many GHZ is Good for a laptop?

The ultimate test for measuring the CPU speed of a laptop is to measure how many GHz it can perform without heating too much.

What is GHz?

The processor clock speed of a computer is also known as the GHz which is measured in GigaHertz. It determines how fast your CPU can run and thus, you should choose a laptop with higher GHz if you want better performance.

The laptop I used has a T2250 clocked at 1.73 GHz. 2200 MHz is about 60% of this CPU’s max speed, and that is a pretty good GHz for normal use (i.e., browsing the internet, writing documents). Many laptops I had in the past were limited to about 800 MHz (and sometimes even less). That was a horrible GHz for a laptop, and 600 MHz is just as bad.

If I had to recommend a CPU speed for a laptop, I would say that 2200 MHz is good enough for normal use, but if you are not afraid of overclocking it (which means voiding your warranty), then go with 2400 MHz (i.e., 2 x 1.8 GHz) because it will increase performance by 15-25% without producing too much heat (and what’s the point of having a high-end laptop if you can’t use its full potential?

How to measure GHz on Laptop?

Here are three tests I did to determine this.

Test Setup:

1) Keep all the cooling options fully open (i.e., maximum fan speed) so that it can avoid getting heated up fast.

2) Stress test the CPU so it stays at its maximum GHz for a long time.

3) Ensure the laptop is not too hot to touch. If it is, then you failed in step two or three.

Results: 1) I did one test with CoreTemp. It reported that my Core Duo T2250 was running at 2198 MHz. I believe that was its max GHz because after some time it dropped to 2185 MHz and stayed there for some more time.

Results: 2) I did the second test with prime95. It reported all cores of my CPU as 100% busy, so this proved that my laptop is non-overclocked and running at full speed (i.e., its max GHz).

Results: 3) I touched the laptop after 15 minutes. It was cool to touch, so I consider that as a pass for this test.

NOTE: I could not do more than 15 minutes of stress testing because of my cooling options. If you want to do longer stress tests you should disable all cooling options (i.e., close all fans) in order to make sure the laptop is really hot. If you failed in doing that (even when you tried to keep it cool), then your CPU is not running at the maximum GHz of the CPU.

What is a good processor speed for a laptop?

An average processor with a decent all-rounded performance that is suitable for gaming and an intermediate level of professional work should have a base clock speed of about 3.0 GHz with a Turbo boost of about 4.0 GHz.

This will provide the user with good enough responsiveness when dealing with daily computing tasks, be it web browsing or working in an Office suite, or multimedia tasks.

A good quad-core processor should have a base clock speed of about 3.0 GHz with a Turbo boost of about 3.5 GHz or 4.0 GHz for its four cores, which provides the user an excellent experience in most tasks that include heavy multimedia usage.

For better performance, you will need to go beyond these specs.

This will depend on the user’s needs and what he intends to do with his computer.

If you are looking for a good processor speed for video editing, then I would recommend 8 cores.

Although this is not always true, it just depends on the software that you might use for your work.

How important are GHz in a laptop?

Proponents of gaming laptops will cite the importance of GHz at every opportunity. The higher, the faster – and therefore faster is better! You can see this sort of thinking in many internet comment sections:

-“i7 with a 2.5GHz clock speed will beat i5 with a 1.7GHz regardless if it’s 3rd or 4th gen.”

– “More GHz means a better computer. People who disagree are clueless”

This sort of thinking is not only incorrect but could be potentially dangerous if relied upon to make purchases.

Is 1.8 GHz good for a laptop?

People who answered the question believe that it is not safe for laptops because it operates at 1.8 GHz, which is the same frequency as quartz. Quartz is often able to shatter, and laptops are more likely to break because of this. The answer that people believe seems the most accurate is given.

No. Laptop processors often do not scale well (meaning that they can’t run at high speeds like a desktop processor). 2 GHz is about the minimum speed for a modern-day laptop chip. So I would not recommend going above 3.7 GHz as a standard speed for gaming, anything more than that will just be too much for any decent-sized laptop to handle without having to reduce graphic settings in games.
