The i5-8250U is one of the most powerful CPUs for laptops in this price range, with a base clock speed of 1.6 GHz and bootable speeds up to 3.4Ghz.

The Acer Aspire 5 offers a superb value for money option for the bachelors and masters students. It sits right in the middle of our list with regards to power but excels in other areas such as the display.

The i5-8250U is one of the most powerful CPUs for laptops in this price range, with a base clock speed of 1.6Ghz and bootable speeds up to 3.4Ghz. The Radeon RX 560X graphics card offers enough power to run high-end games at decent settings, although it definitely struggles with demanding games, especially on the highest settings.

The IPS display is great for watching movies and offers a wide viewing angle, which really comes in handy when more than one person wants to watch a movie or show together.

It has a rechargeable 7 hours battery life – a decent figure, but not as high as some of the other laptops on the list.

It also features a sharp, 1920 by 1080 display for watching movies and playing games. All of this is packed into a stylish metal build that weighs only 2kgs – an ideal travel weight!

The Acer True Harmony sound system offers 360-degree surround sound with deep bass through its built-in subwoofer.

The speakers are pretty decent at producing high-quality music, perfect for chilling out to your favorite tunes. The Acer Aspire 5 offers one of the best value for money ratios amongst laptops in this price range, but it does have some negatives.

It comes with only 256GB storage – not enough space if you are planning on downloading lots of movies and shows to watch offline. The HDMI port only runs at 30Hz, limiting the refresh rate to half of what it potentially could be. Finally, there is no SD slot – however, most BCA students will not require this feature so much if they are simply taking notes or doing work on their laptops.

Pros

  • 7 hours battery life
  • Sharp IPS display
  • Radeon RX 560X graphics card
  • Acer True Harmony sound system Cons:  Not as much storage as we would like, only 256GB
  • HDMI port

Cons

  • HDMI port is limited to 30HZ

Dell Inspiron 14

Specification:

CPU: ‎1.2 GHz core_i3_family | RAM: 4 GB | Storage: 128 GB SSD | Display: ‎‎14 Inches [1366×768]

I bought my Dell laptop because of its great deal, for about $400 USD including taxes and shipping. I didn’t really care too much what make of laptop it was, but after having used it for six months I can say that I’m satisfied with my purchase; the only drawback is that Dell offers no customization options.

You can get it with 4-8 GB of RAM, 250 GB to 1000+ GB HDD, and i3 to i7 processing speed. It is possible to update the laptop after purchase if you are willing to take apart the back panel yourself with a screwdriver. Really all I wanted was an affordable computer that could handle my usual activities, surfing the web, writing documents and presentations, watching movies, playing games.

The laptop is very lightweight and has a 14-inch display rather than a 17 inch. It has one USB 2.0 port, two USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI port so I can plug it into my TV to watch movies from my HDD, a port for the power cord, and an audio line out. It also has a webcam that works fairly well with Skype, though it is not HD quality.

The keyboard is comfortable to type on and quiet; however, I find the mouse pad fairly small and the right-click button isn’t very responsive. The battery life is not as long as other laptops I’ve had, lasting about 5 hours on high usage and maybe half a day on idle.

There are two speakers on either side of the keyboard that works well for watching movies or playing games; however, they don’t get very loud. The sound quality is pretty good, though not as good as external speakers or headphones plugged into the audio line out.

Overall, I have been fairly satisfied with this laptop. It has many features that are common to laptops in its price range, and for the most part, does what I need it to do without slowing down or crashing unexpectedly. The Dell Inspiron 14 is a good computer for those who are looking for an inexpensive laptop to do common tasks.

Pros

  • Inexpensive (about $400 USD)
  • Good for basic activities like surfing the web, watching movies, playing games, etc.
  • Light weight
  • Portable
  • Easy to use

Cons

  • Smaller Keyboard/mousepad

This is a high-quality laptop that will likely meet all of your basic computing needs. It has a powerful i7 processor, 16 GB of RAM, and a 512 SSD hard drive. Furthermore, it has decent battery life so you will be able to use this for more than 4 hours if you are using it for basic tasks such as checking email or surfing the web. If these are not your main purposes for needing a laptop then I would suggest that maybe you should consider an alternative option. However, if you are looking for a laptop that will suit your basic needs and looks aesthetically pleasing, then this is the way to go.

Pros

  • Good price
  • Decent specs
  • Aesthetic design

Cons

  • No optical drive

Buying Guide

As a student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in computer application, it is always advised to buy laptops for BCA which are portable and lightweight. The laptop should be of less than 4 kg weight so that you can carry it with ease. Here I’m giving some tips on buying the best laptop for BCA students.

1) Processor

This is one of the most important things one must check before buying any laptop. If you want your laptop to perform well then go for Intel i3/i5/i7 processors instead of AMD processors. Though both have the same types of processors intel provides better performance as compared to AMD processors.

2) RAM & hard disk

You need a high-speed internet connection at your home or college otherwise it would be better to go for laptops with 4 Gb ram and 160GB hard disk.

3) Graphics card

Apple, Dell, and HP mostly produce good-quality laptops. Apple is expensive but its graphic card is really very good. Also check if a graphics card is present or not, if it is available then go for it.

4) Battery life

The battery life of the laptop must be at least 3 hours so that you can use your laptop without an electricity supply. You can test the battery timing by checking the specifications given in websites/stores online before buying a laptop. If possible buy a laptop that has a removable battery so that you can replace the old one with a new one when required.

5) Webcam:

Even though a webcam is not a necessity but as technology is growing rapidly so buy a laptop that has a webcam as it will provide you the facility of video chatting with your friends.

6) Operating system:

This is not much important because either you can go for windows or mac. Both have their own pros and cons. Take the one that suits your comfort level.

7) Weight:

As a college-going student, weight matters a lot because if you carry a heavy load then it would be discomforting to carry a laptop in your bag pack all the time. Keep this thing in mind before buying a laptop from the market or online stores.

8) Price:

If money is not an issue then only go for branded laptops like Dell, HP, Sony, etc but if you are facing a problem in spending money then don’t go for branded laptops. You can also check the laptop market near your college and ask vendors to show good quality, lesser price laptops available in stock.

Hope this information would be useful for you and make your task of buying a good quality laptop easy and comfortable. Good luck with your search!
